No. 15 Ichabods drop Friday night match to Griffons

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 15 Washburn (9-3, 3-2) fell 3-0 in a Friday night match to Missouri Western State (10-4, 3-2). The Ichabods return to action quickly hosting Northwest Missouri State on Saturday at 2 p.m.  

Washburn had leads in the first two sets before falling 25-20 and 25-15, in the third the Griffons came away with a 25-12 match clinching victory.  

Missouri Western jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead with a couple of errors from Washburn contributing to it. The Ichabods kept it close and were able to string together five straight points in the middle of the set beginning with a kill from Rachel Schwensen and ending the run with back-to-back blocks, taking a 17-15 lead. Washburn led 20-19 before the Griffons reeled off six straight to take the first set 25-20.  

The Ichabods jumped out quickly in the second set to a 4-1 lead with Jalyn Stevenson securing two of the points on aces. Missouri Western came back quickly, tying the set at six before knocking down four straight kills to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Washburn hit -.086 in the set, knocking down only four total kills. The Griffons won the final three points of the set to win 25-15.  

It was more of the same in the third, Missouri Western won the first five points and seven of the first eight. Three straight kills by the Griffons made it 18-4 and the Western offense kept clicking, hitting .375 in the set with 17 kills. Washburn was able to win five straight points but reached a season-low 12 points in the final set of the match.  

The Griffons hit .227 in the match and tallied up 46 kills while Washburn was held to 25 kills on the night and hit .051 as a team. Missouri Western also held advantages in assists, blocks and digs.  

Rachel Schwensen led with seven kills and had three blocks as well. Corinna McMullen had 14 assists to pace the Ichabods and Taylor Rottinghaus had a team-high 18 digs.  

Missouri Western was led by Holly Heldt with 11 kills and Taylor Russell with 10 while hitting .321.
