WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada -- Former Ichabod wide receiver Peter Afful has become the second former Washburn football player to take their talents north of the border as he signed a contract to join the roster of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He joins teammate James Letcher, Jr. in the Canadian Football League, who was a standout return specialist for the Montreal Alouettes.
As a senior, Afful was a second team all-MIAA pick finishing seventh in the league in receiving yards with 660 and his eight touchdowns was third in the MIAA. Overall he had 34 catches for 660 yards averaging 19.4 yards per catch which was fourth in the league. In his two-year career as an Ichabod, he was a two-time all-MIAA selection for the Ichabods finishing he career appearing in 23 games recording 1,220 receiving yards on 63 catches with 16 touchdowns. He finished third in program history in yards per catch at 19.37.
In his first season with the Alouettes, Letcher appeared in four games returning 23 punts for 392 yards and a touchdown, returning four kickoffs for 92 yards, and adding a spectacular 125-yard missed field-goal return touchdown. Letcher also made big plays as the Alouettes won the CFL Gray Cup as he returned a 105-yard kickoff return touchdown late in Montreal's stunning Eastern Final upset of the Toronto Argonauts tallying eturned eight punts for 77 yards and six kickoffs for another 207.Â
In his career at Washburn, Letcher was a combined eight-time All-American selection as an Ichabod playing in 48 games making 31 career starts recording 228 career receptions for 2,992 yards and 29 touchdowns averaging 13.1 yards per catch. He scored three kickoff return touchdowns, the most in program history and has averaged 24.3 yards per kickoff return which is second all-time at Washburn for a career. He also finished second on the Ichabod career punt return chart with 611 yards and his 46 returns is fifth. He finished his career ranked first all-time in program history with 228 receptions and 5,623 all-purpose yards, also first in kickoff return touchdowns and tied for first with two punt returns for touchdowns.
