TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 15 Ichabod men's tennis played its first match of the spring at home Saturday afternoon and came away with a 5-2 exhibition victory over William Woods. Washburn will play its first official match next Saturday against the University of Missouri – St. Louis at 2 p.m.
Doubles play began on court three where Daniel Bird and Matthew Earle took a 6-1 victory to open the match up. Sebastian Pjontek and Tommy Cecchetti secured the doubles point for the Ichabods with a 7-6(4) win at No. 2. Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon completed the sweep winning 7-5 on the top court.
Hammes gave Washburn its second point of the match with a two-set victory from No. 2 in singles by set scores of 6-3 and 6-1. The Owls got on the board as Sebastian Pjontek fell 6-3, 6-4 from No. 1. On court three Rendon lost his opening set 6-2 and won the second 7-6(5). In the third set tiebreaker he came up short 10-8.
Pavlos Parson gave the Ichabods the scoring edge from No. 4 winning 6-2 in his opening set and winning 6-3 in the second. Cecchetti secured the match with 6-2 and 6-4 set wins from No. 5. Earle added an extra point with a two-set win at No. 6 by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
