ROME, Ga. – The Washburn Ichabod men's and women's tennis teams each had a doubles squad move into the quarterfinals of the 2024 ITA Cup while
Tim Hammes moved into the singles quarterfinals after the first day of play in Roma, Ga.
On the singles side
Tim Hammes worked a long first set victory over Pedro Liborio of the University of North Georgia, winning 7-6(3) in a tiebreaker. He advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4 win in the second set. Vasek Schneider came up just short falling 7-5 in the first set but rebounded for a 6-2 second set victory. Aniss Rafiq, from Flagler, pulled away in the third set to win 6-1 in the third set.
Hammes will take on Cas de Ruiter of Harding at 10:15 a.m. EST on Friday while Schneider will move to the West Draw.
In doubles action, Vaclav Schneider and Tommy Cechetti fell 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 to Daniel Hammond and Benedek Dzombathelyi from Columbus State in their round of 16 match and the No. 2-seeded team of
Tim Hammes and
Matthew Earle topped Reece Farrow and Hugo Munoz 6-4, 6-2 to move into the quarterfinals, where they will face Jorge Perez and Marcelo Pinto from the Charleston at 3 p.m. on Friday.
On the women's side, Avery Durham and Eva Schwartz from Angelo State outlasted
Isabella Martensson and
Leo Floeth 6-7 (4), 6-4, 15-13 in the round of 16 while
Renske Ubachs and
Daniela Tijaro dispatched Anais Ruyssen and Dea Gorgidze from Wayne State (Mich.) 6-4, 7-5. Ubachs and Tijaro will face Shaira Rivera and Valentina Mutilba from West Alabama at 3 p.m. on Friday.
