Ichabods sweep the No. 23-ranked Griffons

TOPEKA, Kan. – After falling to Missouri Western in a hard-fought five-set loss in their first meeting of the season, the Washburn Ichabods rolled to a 3-0 sweep over the No. 23-ranked Griffons ending a five-match losing streak in the process on Wednesday night in Lee Arena. The Ichabods will return to action on Nov. 8 hosting Nebraska-Kearney as part of their Alumni Weekend before wrapping up the home slate the following night hosting Fort Hays State on senior night.
 
In the opening set, the Ichabods (18-4, 9-3 MIA) led from start to finish picking up the 25-21 win as Jalyn Stevenson and Alex Dvorak each had four kills.
 
In the second set, the Griffons jumped out to a 6-2 lead before an Ichabod timeout. Missouri Western (18-5, 8-3 MIAA) increased its lead to 14-8. After Washburn's second timeout, the Ichabods outscored the Griffons 11-4 tying the score at 19. From that point, the Ichabods finished out the match 6-4 taking the second set 25-23.
 
Washburn closed out the match topping the Griffons 25-20 in a set that saw the Ichabods break a 9-9 tie using a 10-4 run to pull away from Missouri Western only to see the Griffons come back with a 6-0 run of their own tying the score at 19-19. With the score knotted at 19-19 on Missouri Western's serve, an ace was called but a successful challenge by the Ichabods reversed the score and the Ichabods outscored Missouri Western 5-1.
 
Stevenson ld the Ichabods with 12 kills adding a double double adding 10 digs. Dvorak had eight kills adding six blocks and Emery Keebaugh had eight kills. Taylor Rottinghaus recorded a match-high 26 digs and Corinna McMullen had 20 assists.
 
Noelle Stucliffe led the Griffons with 12 kills.
 
The Ichabods hit .132 as a team holding the Griffons to a .103 hitting percentage.
 
The win was the first over the Griffons since Oct. 7, 2022 in Topeka in a 3-1 win.
