No. 20 Ichabods squeak by Griffons on Senior Day

11/3/2024 4:13:00 PM

Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 20 Washburn Ichabod women's soccer team used a late goal from Josie Boyle to earn a 1-0 Senior Day victory over No. 15 Missouri Western State. The Ichabods will close the regular season with a Turnpike Tussle match against Emporia State on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.

Like Washburn's contest on Friday night against Northwest Missouri, the game started slowly for both teams. The Ichabods, who came into the weekend ranked 22nd in shots taken per game, only mustered one attempt in the first half, an off-balance shot by Belle Kennedy in the 12th minute. The visiting Griffons put pressure on the Ichabod defense, using a variety of different angles to find opportunities to score. Despite recording four shots on goal in the half, Missouri Western was unable to break the 0-0 tie after 45 minutes.

The second half opened with a defensive scare for Washburn, when the Griffons' Lauren Nylund found an opening in the center of the box following a free kick, but Nylund's shot attempt was stopped at point-blank range by Ichabod goalkeeper Alli Harrington.

The defining moment of the contest came in the 79th minute, when the Ichabods earned a corner kick. Aubrey Tanksley's corner found Boyle on the back post, and Boyle's header bounced off a Griffon defender and into the net to give Washburn a late 1-0 lead. The Ichabod defense was forced to step up once again in the 85th minute, but Washburn was able to clear out a corner kick and make a save on a shot attempt to halt the Griffons' late comeback attempt.

Washburn took seven shots in the contest, with four coming on goal. Khloe Schuckman took two shots to lead the Ichabods, while five other Washburn players added one attempt each. Harrington posted her second clean sheet of the weekend, making seven saves in net.

Missouri Western took nine shots in the match, becoming the first team to out-shoot the Ichabods this season. Four different Griffons recorded two shots each, including goalkeeper Keeley Kroonenberg, who also made three saves in goal.
