Ichabod soccer claims MIAA championship with win over Hornets

EMPORIA, Kan. – The No. 16 Washburn Ichabod women's soccer team claimed the outright MIAA regular season championship with a 2-0 road win over the Emporia State Hornets on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Ichabods earned the top seed in the MIAA Tournament and will host a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, Nov. 10. Washburn will learn its opponent after the conclusion of Wednesday night's remaining MIAA games.

The Ichabods (13-3-2, 10-1-1 MIAA) were forced to play defense for most of the first half, with the Hornets (6-8-3, 4-6-2 MIAA) holding possession for long stretches of time. Washburn managed to find the opening goal in the 21st minute, after Viviana Soto-Herrera scored her third goal of the season on a long shot from outside the box. Despite being on the defensive end for much of the half, the Ichabods led the Hornets in shots by a 5-4 margin.

Washburn turned up the offensive pressure to start the second half, recording the first eight shots of the period. The Ichabods found an insurance goal in the 65th minute when Mackinly Rohn scored on a close-range attempt after a scramble for the ball in the Hornets' box. Emporia State mounted an improved offensive attack in the last 20 minutes of the contest, taking four shots on goal, but the Washburn defense held on to preserve the shutout victory.

The Ichabods took 15 shots in the contest, with five coming on goal. Khloe Schuckman led the team with five shots, two of which were on target. Soto-Herrera and Josie Boyle each added two shot attempts in the victory. Alli Harrington made four saves in goal to earn her fourth shutout in five starts.

Emporia State took eight shots in the match, with four coming on target. Abby Bachman led the Hornets with three shot attempts, all of which were on goal. Mackenzi Goen made three saves in net.
