LAKELAND, Fla. -- No. 9 Washburn women's tennis rallied from facing match point to take a 4-3 win over Florida Southern College on Monday afternoon. The Ichabods are right back in action on Tuesday against Rollins College at 3 p.m. EST.
In doubles play the Moccasins (2-5) got the early advantage as Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs fell 6-0 on court three. Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson battled to win 6-4 at No. 2 and even doubles play up for Washburn (5-0). No. 8 ranked Maja Jung and Lara Schmid stayed perfect together in the spring winning 6-4 at No. 1 to take the first point of the match.
In doubles action Florida Southern tied the match as Cadence Lynn lost 6-4 and 6-0 sets at No. 5. Schmid lost in two sets, 6-2 and 6-4 on court three to No. 44 Olivia Bryant and the Moccasins took the lead. Koper got out to a quick start at No. 4 winning 6-1 in the first set before falling 6-4 in the second. She flipped the scores around to win the third set 6-4 and even the match at two.
Playing at No. 2 Ubachs lost 6-3 in the opening set but battled back for a 6-2 win in the second. The third set went the home team's way 6-2 and set up match point. No. 3 Jung lost her first set of the spring on Monday 6-0 to No. 41 Laia Pasini. She rallied to win 6-3 in the second and secured a 7-5 win in the third set to tie the match from the top court.
Martensson also fell in her first set, 6-3, but worked quickly to even the match at No. 6, winning 6-1 in the second set. She secured the match for the Ichabods with a 6-4 win in the third set to keep Washburn undefeated on the year.
