SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- No. 13 Washburn tennis led early and never looked back on its way to defeating No. 3 Flagler 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The Ichabods finish their time in Florida on Thursday against No. 2 Saint Leo at 2 p.m. CST.
Matthew Earle and Daniel Bird got the ball rolling right away picking up a 6-0 win at No. 2. Pavlos Parson and Santiago Rendon gave the doubles point to Washburn (4-2) with a 6-2 win at No. 3. Tim Hammes and Sebastian Pjontek led 5-3 on court one when the duo for the Saints (4-2) retired.
In singles play Flagler evened the match with No. 30 Parsons falling 6-3 in both sets from No. 5. The Saints briefly took the lead with Earle losing 6-1 in his first set and 6-4 in the second. No. 11 Rendon evened the match back up on court three winning both sets he played 6-3.
Playing at No. 1 Hammes won his opening set against No. 7 Jacopo Denitto 7-6 but the second set went the other way, 6-4. In the third Hammes trailed early before coming back late to pull away with a 6-4 win to set up match point. No. 10 Pjontek trailed early from No. 2, falling 6-2 in his opening set. He evened the match back up winning 7-5 in the second over No.1 ranked Mercier Baptiste. In the deciding third set he also came back from an early deficit to come away with a 6-4 match-clinching victory.
Tommy Cecchetti added to the score at No. 4, splitting the first two sets 6-4 his way and 6-3 to the Saints, and winning the third 6-4 as well to finish off the 5-2 road victory.
