JACKSON, Tenn. -- Washburn came back from down six runs to tie the game in the ninth but came up short in extra innings against Union, losing the opening game of the series 9-8. The Ichabods take on the Bulldogs in a doubleheader on Friday with first pitch in game one set for 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs (2-3) began the game with their leadoff batter reaching on an error and moving to second before stealing third base. They scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly into right field.
The Ichabods (2-3) got two on in the second inning but couldn't bring one across. After giving up an unearned run in the first Cooper Carlgren settled into his second start of the season with scoreless second and third innings.
Washburn got on the board in the fourth after a leadoff single by Cale Savage followed by two more singles from Easton Bruce and Cash Jay, with Jay knocking in Savage. Trey Adams kept the line moving with another single into left field, scoring Bruce to go up 2-1.
In the bottom of the inning Union replicated the Ichabods scoring two runs on four hits and leaving two on. In the fifth they added more to that lead with Carlgren leaving after throwing 4.1 innings, giving up four earned and striking out six. Logan Bartlett replaced him with two runners on and Union was able to plate five in the fifth on three hits, an error and two walks and go up 8-2.
Payton McHarg got one run back in the sixth with a leadoff home run over the right field wall, but that was all the Ichabods could get in the inning. Sam Wragge took over on the mound and worked a scoreless sixth in the home half of the inning.
Hayden Priest singled with one out in the seventh and was scored on a double from Trevor McCollum. McCollum didn't have to wait on base long with McHarg taking a 2-1 pitch over the wall for another home run to make it a 8-6 game.
Caden Bressler took over on the mound and got the game to the ninth inning with the same score after throwing two scoreless innings.
Washburn was down to its final out in the ninth before McCollum reached base after being hit. The game was tied with McHarg launching his third home run of the game over the right field wall. The Ichabods couldn't bring across any more and the game moved to extras after another clean inning from Bressler.
In the top of the tenth Washburn got one runner on but were unable to bring them across. In the bottom of the inning Union got a two-out home run into left center to win the game 9-8.
The Ichabods picked up 12 hits in the game led by McHarg who had three home runs, becoming the fourth player since 1999 for Washburn to go yard three times in a game. For the second time this season he drove in five runs. Easton Bruce also picked up three hits going 3-5 at the plate.
On the mound four pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts over 9.2 innings, allowing nine hits and issuing three walks. In the field Washburn committed four errors while the Bulldogs committed none.
