INDIANAPOLIS, Il. -- No. 15 Washburn men's tennis lost its first match of the season on Friday afternoon 4-3 to No. 7 Indianapolis. The Ichabods (1-1) stay in Indiana and take on No. 8 Wayne State on Saturday.
In doubles competition the Greyhounds (3-0) took the advantage early with Tommy Cecchetti and Sebastian Pjontek falling 6-1 at No. 2. Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon came back from an early deficit to tie the set at 6 but the tiebreaker went to the Greyhounds 8-6 to give them the doubles point. Matthew Earle and Daniel Bird also needed a tiebreaker to settle their set, but also came up short, 9-7.
In singles the Greyhounds got a point from the top court with Pjontek felling 6-3 in the first set and 6-0 in the second. Hammes gave Washburn its first point from No. 3 winning a close first set 7-5 and pulling away 6-3 in the second. Rendon tied the match winning a pair of 6-4 sets at No. 4.
Bird stayed close early in the first set before dropping it 6-3, the second set ended with the same result to put Indianapolis ahead. Pavlos Parson lost his first set 6-1 at No. 1 but flipped the scores around in the second set to force a third. The third set was tied 4-4 but the Greyhounds took the final two points to secure the match. Cecchetti finished out his competition at No. 6 winning his third set 6-1 after winning 6-1 in the first set and falling 4-6 in the second. His result made it a 4-3 match.
