Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Il. -- No. 15 Washburn women's tennis went down to the final point but prevailed with a 4-3 road victory over No. 12 Indianapolis on Friday night. The Ichabods take on No. 8 Wayne State in a neutral court contest on Saturday at 5 p.m. CST.
In doubles play it was the Greyhounds (2-1) who took the early advantage, winning 6-4 over Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson at No. 2. Renske Ubachs and Maddie Shelley knotted things up with a 6-4 win of their own on court three. Maja Jung and Lara Schmid were quick to follow, winning 6-3 at No. 1 and securing the doubles point for Washburn (2-0).
Indianapolis evened the match right away in singles as Koper fell 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 2. Jung worked quickly to re-take the advantage, cruising to a 6-1 first set win and prevailing 6-4 in the second. On court three Ubachs lost a pair of 6-3 sets to even the match up again.
Martensson set up match point winning in two sets on No. 6, 6-2 and 6-3. Cadence Lynn won her first set 6-3 and had an early lead in the second before losing 7-5 and eventually 6-0 in the third from No. 5. Schmid went back-and-forth all night at No. 4, coming up short in a long first set 7-6(4). The second set also needed a tiebreaker and this time she came out on top winning 7-6(5) and she carried that momentum into a 6-3 third set and match deciding victory.
