WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 5 Washburn picked up its first sweep of the season Sunday morning with a 4-0 win over the University of Texas at Tyler. The Ichabods return home on March 19 to take on William Jewell College.
Doubles play started for Washburn on court three with Renske Ubachs and Maddie Shelley working a quick 6-1 win to open up the match. Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson followed closely behind with a 6-1 win themselves at No. 2, taking the first point of the match. No. 5 Lara Schmid and Maja Jung led 4-3 at No. 1 over No. 11 Muskan Gupta and Allison Schwartz when the point was decided.
The Ichabods opened singles play with Martensson winning 6-0 and 6-1 sets at No. 1 over the Patriots. No. 48 Ubachs followed winning 6-2 in the first set and 6-1 in the second to bring up match point quickly. Cadence Lynn needed an extra point but took her first set 7-5 but was able to roll to a 6-2 in in the second set to clinch the match and the sweep.
On the top court No.3 Jung won her first set 6-4 and led 4-1 in the second when the match was decided. Schmid won in the opening set 6-1 before falling 6-1 in the second with the third set left unfinished. Martine Carroll lost 6-2 in her first set but led 6-5 in the second when the match was clinched.
