Ichabods ride balanced performance to 10-3 win and sweep over Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Washburn took control early and never let up on its way to its first season sweep of the season defeating Missouri Western State 10-3 on Monday afternoon. The Ichabods head home for a quick turnaround and face Northwest Missouri State on Tuesday at 3 p.m.  

Both Payton McHarg and Cale Savage began the game with a pair of walks, Cash Jay singled to load the bases. Hayden Priest drove in one run with a sacrifice fly to left field. A second run scored on an error in the field on a ball hit by Connor Scott.  

Chase Torkelson started the game on the mound and began the game with a 1-2-3 inning. The Griffons (12-9, 4-5 MIAA) got their first hit in the third inning but remained scoreless. Washburn (12-8, 7-2 MIAA) added two more runs in the third inning on a home run to left field from Jay, scoring Savage who walked to lead off the inning. The long ball gave Jay his fourth straight game hitting one out of the park.  

Jett Buck singled with one out in the fourth and McHarg and Savage walked again to load the bases. For a second straight inning Jay brought in a pair of runs with a single into left field, extending the lead to 6-0.  

Washburn added one run in the sixth inning with Watkins, McHarg and Jay loading the bases on a single, hit by pitch and walk respectively. Priest saw four pitches at the plate, all out of the zone for a four-pitch walk. Torkelson finished his day on the mound after the sixth inning, finishing with six innings scoreless tossed, giving up just four hits with a pair of strikeouts. 

The Ichabods plated another run in the seventh with McHarg hitting a single into center, scoring Jett Buck who singled earlier in the inning. Logan Bartlett took over for Torkelson in the seventh and Missouri Western scored one run coming on a wild pitch after a hit batter reached base. The Griffons got two more across on a pair of hits in the bottom of the eighth to make it 8-3.  

Teagan Tamiya led off the top of the ninth with a pinch hit single, he was moved to second after McHarg was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Savage. McHarg came around to score on a pair of passed balls to put the Ichabods in double digits scoring.  

Max Clark pitched the ninth inning and set the home team down in three batters, with a pair of strikeouts to secure the sweep.  

For a second straight game the Ichabods allowed just three runs, this time Torkelson, Bartlett, Ashton Jenkins and Max Clark combined to toss all nine innings. The staff struck out six Griffons while allowing just six hits and giving up four walks.  

At the plate Washburn had 12 hits led by Cash Jay and Cale Savage who each had three. Jay drove in four runs while also walking once, Hayden Priest also had two RBI.
