Ichabods drop back-and-forth game two to Hornets 14-11

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Just like game one Washburn went back-and-forth with Emporia State, this time coming up short in game two of the series losing 13-11. Both teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

The Ichabods (8-8, 2-2 MIAA) got the scoring started early as Payton McHarg send a solo home run over the right field wall with one out in the first. Cale Savage reached on an error and after another error Ike Book was able to score him on an RBI groundout.

Cooper Carlgren started the game for Washburn and the Hornets (10-7, 3-2 MIAA) were able to get two in the first inning as a hit batter and a walk came around to score on a single. A one-out triple by Blake Scott followed by a wild pitch quickly put the Ichabods back on top after two innings.

Emporia State knotted up the game for a second time in the third with a walk and a double to make it 3-3. Washburn had another response in the fourth with back-to-back doubles to put two on base. Easton Bruce singled through the right side to score them both and go up 5-3.

The lead swung back the other way in the fourth as Logan Bartlett took over for Carlgren on the mound after a pair of walks. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners over and a double scored both to tie it. Emporia State got another single to go up the middle to take the lead.

The Ichabods once again re-took the lead in the top of the fifth with Jett Buck homering to left center field, scoring Cash Jay who had walked. ESU tied it up with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game for a third time.

The Hornets used the long ball again in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to go ahead 9-7. Jay was hit to lead off the seventh and was brought home with Buck hitting his second homer of the game, this time to straight away center. A walk from Blake Scott put another runner on and Cal Watkins was able to come off the bench for a pinch hit two-run home run to cap off a four-run inning leading 11-9.

In the bottom of the seventh Emporia State loaded the bases with two-outs and cleared them with a grand slam to go up 13-11. In the eighth the Hornets scored anotehr run on three walks and an error.

Washburn was able to manage just one hit in the final two innings as the series got evened at one with a 14-11 final score.
