Washburn offense unable to get going in loss to No. 8 Lions

JOPLIN, Mo. -- Washburn held No. 8 Missouri Southern scoreless through three innings but were unable to get going offensively in a 3-0 loss to the Lions in game one of the series. The two teams will begin game two on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Caden Bressler got his third start of the season for the Ichabods (15-11, 9-5 MIAA) and delivered a pair of 1-2-3 innings to begin the game aided by a double play and an assist by Cal Watkins at second base.

The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Lions (25-5) were able to get on the board after a walk, wild pitch and a single, scoring one run. Washburn got two on base for the second time in the fifth inning but were unable to knot up the game.

Missouri Southern got a one-out single to get started in the fifth and after a walk another single brought in the second run of the game. Griffin Huiatt entered to pitch and allowed a sacrifice fly but limited any other scoring to keep the game at 3-0.

Neither team got a hit in the sixth inning, in the seventh Watkins picked up a two-out double for the Ichabods but that is all they would muster.

Huiatt kept the Lions in check the rest of the way, allowing two hits after the sixth inning. On the other end Washburn was only able to manage one hit and Missouri Southern held on to take game one of the series in a shutout.

The Ichabods recorded a season-low four hits, with Cal Watkins picking up half of them. Bressler and Huiatt combined to pitch the entire game, striking out three and allowing eight hits. Bressler took the loss and moved to 2-2 on the season.
