SEARCY, Ar. -- No. 6 Washburn trailed 3-1 to Harding on Friday afternoon but won the final three points of the match to come away with a 4-3 road victory. The Ichabods head to Missouri on Saturday to take on Southwest Baptist at 1 p.m.
Washburn (9-3) got off to a quick start in doubles play with Sebastian Pjontek and Daniel Bird working quickly to pick up a 6-2 victory at No. 2. Santiago Rendon and Pavlos Parson rallied for an early deficit to win 6-4 on court three and clinch the first point for the Ichabods. Tim Hammes and Matthew Earle trailed the Bison 6-5 at No. 1 with the dual left unfinished.
Harding (8-6) was able to even the match up to begin singles competition with No. 28 Rendon falling in two sets, 6-4 and 7-5 at No. 3 to No. 51 Cas de Ruiter. Playing on court two No. 10 Pjontek took his first set to a tiebreaker but fell short, 7-5. In the second set the Bison took a lead, winning 6-4. At No. 5 Parson, ranked No. 56, lost his opening set 6-3 but bounced back for a 6-1 win in the second set. Harding was able to force match point winning 6-4 in the third set.
Bird pulled away in his opening set to win a tiebreaker 7-4. He carried that momentum into the second set for a 6-4 win at No. 6. In the first set on the top court No. 14 Hammes lost a marathon tiebreaker, 12-10. In the second set he came out on the other end, winning 7-2 to even the dual up. He was able to pull away late in the third set to win 6-3 and even the match back up. No. 63 Tommy Cecchetti won his opening set 6-2 but the dual was evened up 6-3 in the second set. After trailing early in the third set he completed the personal and team comeback with a 6-3 win to finish the match.
