WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 13 Washburn won its second straight match with a 4-3 road victory over No. 18 Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods finish their trip to Texas against UT Tyler at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday.
In doubles action it was the Mustangs who struck first with Sebastian Pjontek and Tim Hammes coming up short at No. 1, 6-3. No. 33 Daniel Bird and Matthew Earle fell 7-5 from No. 2 to put Washburn down 1-0. Santiago Rendon and Pavlos Parson were knotted at six when the point was decided.
No. 15 Hammes had a more favorable time in doubles, winning 6-3 and 6-4 sets from No. 1 to even up the match. No. 22 Rendon followed winning 6-4 in the first set and 7-5 in the second to take the lead from No. 3. Tommy Cecchetti, ranked No. 69, set up match point winning 6-3 in his first set at No. 4, falling 6-1 in the second and winning 6-4 in the third.
No. 4 Pjontek won his first set 6-4 but fell in a tiebreaker 7-6 in the second before losing 6-2 in the third set at No. 2. Earle also lost a 7-6 tiebreaker to open his match at No. 5 and fell 6-3 in the second set, tying the match. For a second straight day Bird played hero winning 7-6 in his first set at No. 6 and 6-3 in the match-clinching second set.
