No. 6 Washburn plays strong final sets to top Southeastern Oklahoma State 4-3

EDMOND, Okla. -- No. 6 Washburn men's tennis trailed early in the match but rallied in the final two sets of singles play to win 4-3 over Southeastern Oklahoma State in Edmond. The Ichabods put an eleven-match winning streak on the line on Sunday against Southern Arkansas at 10 a.m.  

In doubles action Washburn (15-3) got out to a quick advantage as No. 37 Daniel Bird and Sebastian Pjontek came away with a 6-1 win from No. 2. Santiago Rendon and Pavlos Parson fell 7-5 at No. 3 and the Savage Storm (18-7) were able to even things up. No. 25 Tim Hammes and Matthew Earle went into a tiebreaker on the top court. In the tiebreaker No. 12 Juan Gonzales and Martin Jurkovic pulled away to win 7-3 and take the doubles point.  

Southeastern Oklahoma was able to go up by two as No. 21 Pjontek fell in a pair of 6-2 sets playing at No. 2. No. 9 Hammes lost his opening set 6-3 to No. 40 Juan Gonzales. In the second and third sets he was able to flip the scores around, winning 6-3 both times to put Washburn on the board from No. 1. Bird worked a quick 6-3 opening set win from No. 6 and evened up the match with a 7-6(4) tiebreaker win in the second.  

No. 37 Rendon took his first set to an extra point but came up just short with a 7-5 decision. He bounced back in the second set for a 6-1 win and carried the momentum into the third, winning 6-2 from No. 3 to set up match point. No. 69 Parson also fell in his first set, 6-3, playing from No. 4. He evened the duel up with a 6-3 win in the second and pulled away late to win a 7-5 third set and clinch the match. Tommy Cecchetti took his opening set 6-4 but fell 6-2 and 7-6(5) in a tiebreaking third set playing from No. 5 to close out the match.
