EDMOND, Okla. -- No. 15 Washburn took the doubles point and never looked back, winning a 5-2 neutral court contest over No. 39 Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday morning. The Ichabods face a third straight ranked opponent Sunday as they face No. 12 Southern Arkansas at 10 a.m.
The Savage Storm (16-6) struck first in doubles action with Isabella Martensson and Peyton Koper falling 6-2 from No. 2. No. 7 Lara Schmid and Maja Jung evened doubles up with a 6-1 win on the top court. Playing at No. 3 Renske Ubachs and Maddie Shelley took a 6-3 win to clinch the first point of the match for Washburn (16-3).
Ubachs carried the momentum into pulling away with a 7-5 first set win at No. 2. She rolled right into a 6-0 sweep in the second to put the Ichabods up 2-0. No. 5 Jung also played an extra point in her first set but also came away with the 7-5 win. She worked a 6-4 win in the second to bring up match point for Washburn. Southeastern Oklahoma was able to get on the board as Koper fell in a pair of sets 6-3, 6-4.
Martensson fell 7-5 in her first set but bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second. After trailing early in the third set she finished strong to earn a 6-3 win and clinch the match. Schmid added an extra point with 6-3 and 6-2 set victories at No. 6. Martine Carroll lost her first set 6-4 but was able to force a third set with a 7-5 win in the second. The scores were flipped in the third going the way of the Savage Storm to complete the match.
