TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 13 Washburn fell for the first time in seven matches, losing 4-1 to No. 17 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday afternoon. The Ichabods wrap up the regular season against Fort Hays State on Saturday at 11 a.m. for senior day.
Washburn (17-4, 5-2 MIAA) gained the advantage in doubles play first with a 6-3 win at No. 2 for Isabella Martensson and Peyton Koper. The Lopers (18-4, 7-1 MIAA) evened things up as Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs fell 6-2 at No. 3. No. 4 Maja Jung and Lara Schmid took their duel to an extra point but came up short 7-5 as Nebraska-Kearney took the first point of the match.
No. 5 Jung evened the match up to being singles play, defeating No. 28 Jazmin Zamorano 6-1 and 6-3 from No. 1. Martensson fell 6-2 in her first set from No. 4 and came up short with a 6-4 loss in the second. UNK brought up match point with Martine Carroll falling to No. 44 Fabiana Gamboa 6-4 and 6-3 in her two sets from No. 3.
After falling 6-4 in her first set from No. 5, Koper battled back from an early deficit to win 7-5 in the second set. The momentum swung back towards the Lopers as they secured the match with a 6-1 win in the third set. Ubachs led 2-0 in the third set after winning 7-5 in her second set to force a third from No. 2. Schmid took her first set 6-4 and led 3-2 in the second when the match was decided.
