PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Washburn scored first Friday night against No. 2 Central Missouri but a seven-run eighth inning from the top-seeded Mules put the game out of reach as the Ichabods season came to an end with a 9-1 loss in third game of the MIAA Championship Tournament. The Ichabods end the season 32-21.
Just like in the first meeting of the tournament between the two Washburn (32-21) struck first, scoring in its first trip to the plate. Cale Savage took a 1-0 pitch to left for a solo home run, putting the Ichabods up early.
Chase Torkelson got the nod to take the mound for the elimination game and tossed three straight hitless innings to begin the game, allowing just two walks. In the fourth inning the top-seeded Mules (47-7) worked a one-out walk and stole two bases before scoring on a double to tie the game.
The score stayed knotted all the way until the sixth inning when Central Missouri was able to jump in front on a one out solo home run to left field. That is all the damage that would be done in the inning as Torkelson was able to complete his start throwing six full with five strikeouts and only four hits allowed across 112 pitches.
Washburn got two on base in the bottom of the inning but were unable to even the score. Neither team got on the board in the seventh, the next inning the Mules led off with a single before moving to second on a wild pitch with one out. A single and a walk loaded the bases with two of them scoring on a pair of wild pitches. A fielders choice on a bunt scored another run and a pair of walks followed to score another. The seven-run inning for Central Missouri was capped off with a double to left field, scoring two more.
The Ichabods got two runners on in the ninth inning but were unable to bring any all the way around to score.
Washburn tallied three hits in the game, Cale Savage had two of the three. The third came on a pinch-hit knock from Teagan Tamiya in the ninth.
Central Missouri had nine hits in the game, Brennen van Breusegen went 2-3 with a home run and a pair of RBI.
