No. 14 Washburn's tournament run ends in round of 16 to No. 21 Wayne State (MI)

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- No. 14 Washburn women's tennis' season came to an end with a 4-1 loss to No. 21 Wayne State (MI) in the round of 16 at the NCAA National Championships on Monday afternoon. The Ichabods finish the season with a third straight trip to the national stage and a 20-6 overall record.  

Doubles play started with a win for No. 10 seeded Washburn on the top court as the No. 7 ranked pairing of Maja Jung and Lara Schmid were able to work a 6-3 victory over No. 25 ranked Marta Komar and Anais Ruyssen. The No. 7 seeded Warriors (21-5) evened up doubles play, winning 6-3 over Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson at No. 2. Playing at No. 3, Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs played an extra game after being tied at 5-5 but the final two games went the way of Wayne State as the won 7-5 to take the first point of the match.  

The Warriors took a 2-0 lead to begin singles play as Cadence Lynn fell in two sets from No. 6, 6-0 and 6-2. On the first court No. 6 ranked Jung lost a pair of 6-3 sets to No. 49 ranked Ruyssen and Wayne State set up match point. After falling 6-1 in her first set Ubachs battled back to win 6-3 in the second at No. 2 to force a third set. She put the Ichabods on the board, winning the final four games of her third set to win 7-5.  

Playing at No. 3, Koper jumped ahead with a 6-3 win in her opening set. The dual was evened up after a 6-2 set for the Warriors in the second and they were able to clinch the match with a 6-4 victory in the third. Martensson was down 5-1 in her third set after splitting the first two 7-5 and 1-6 from No. 4. Schmid had battled back after falling 6-0 in her first set to win 6-4 in the second and led 4-3 in the third set.

Season notes:  

  • Washburn reached the NCAA Tournament for a fourth straight season (last season was the 19-20 COVID shortened season)  

  • The Ichabods reached the NCAA National Tournament for a third consecutive year 

  • Washburn reached the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2018-19 season
