Five-run eighth helps Ichabods to 10-8 game one win over No. 19 Bronchos

EDMOND, Okla. -- Washburn used a five-run eighth inning to put the game away Friday night, taking game one from No. 19 Central Oklahoma 10-8. Game two is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Cooper Carlgren got the Friday night nod for the Ichabods (30-19) and tossed a scoreless first inning. The Bronchos (36-13) got on the board in the second after a leadoff single, stolen base and a pair of outs to move the runner over. The score stayed knotted until the top of the fourth. With two outs Blake Scott was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single from Jett Buck. Grant Jones tied the game with a double to left center, scoring Scott.

Carlgren retired Central Oklahoma in order in the bottom of the inning. In the fifth Payton McHarg reached on an error to lead off. Cale Savage moved him to second with a single and Cash Jay brought him to third on a sacrifice bunt. Hayden Priest gave the Ichabods the lead with an RBI groundout.

Blake Scott led off the next inning with a single and after Jones was hit by a pitch two were on with one out. Watkins loaded the bases with a single and McHarg followed with another base knock, scoring one. Savage scored two more on a double down the left field line to make it 5-1.

In the bottom of the inning a two-out walk followed by a stolen base put one on before a single scored the run for the Bronchos. Carlgren ended his day after six innings allowing just two runs with four punchouts.

A leadoff walk followed by an error in the field put two on with no outs in the seventh. Another error loaded the bases. Washburn took care of the lead runner at the plate once but couldn't do it again with a single into left field scoring two and making it a one-run game.

McHarg and Savage worked back-to-back one out walks in the eighth. A single from Priest loaded the bases. With the bags juiced Connor Scott worked a walk, scoring a run. Blake Scott followed, taking a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right field for a grand slam to cap off a five-run eighth.

Central Oklahoma was able to score four runs in the ninth on four hits including a pair of home runs. Fidel Hatch entered with two outs and finished off the game with a flyout to center field.

The Ichabods tallied 11 hits in the game, led by Grant Jones who went 3-4 in the game with an RBI. Blake Scott went 2-3, reaching base three times and scoring all three while driving in four runs. Washburn used four total pitcher, combining for seven strikeouts with 11 hits allowed. Carlgren got the win, moving to 5-3 on the year while Hatch knotched his second save of the season.
