No. 13 Ichabods fall in MIAA Semifinals to No. 17 Nebraska-Kearney

EDMOND, Okla. -- No. 13 Washburn's run in the MIAA Tournament came to an end to No. 17 Nebraska-Kearney in the semifinals with a 4-2 loss on Saturday afternoon after a three hour rain delay. The Ichabods will determine their fate in the NCAA Tournament on Monday, May 6.  

In doubles play Washburn (19-5) struck first with Peyton Koper and Isabella Martensson winning 6-2 at No. 2. On the top court No. 4 Maja Jung and Lara Schmid fell 6-3 to No. 39 Narindra Ranaivo and Melisa Becerra as the Lopers (19-4) evened doubles action up. After falling behind 4-1, Maddie Shelley and Renske Ubachs rallied to tie their No. 3 dual at five. Nebraska-Kearney won the final two games to take the doubles point with a 7-5 win.  

Less than an hour into singles action play was hauled due to rain before resuming over three hours later. Before the delay Schmid had won her first set 6-0 at No. 6. She came back to finish off the second with another sweep to put the Ichabods on the board. The Lopers regained the lead as Koper fell in two sets at No. 4, 6-2 and 6-0. Martine Carroll lost her opening set 6-2 to No. 44 Gamboa and fell 6-3 in the second.  

No. 5 Jung lost her opening set 6-3 to No. 28 Jazmin Zamorano but rallied to win 6-4 in the second and carried the momentum into a 6-1 win in the third at No. 1 to stay alive. At No. 2, Ubachs came up just short in a tiebreaker for the first set, losing 7-5. She bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second but fell 6-1 in the third to finish off the match. Martensson lost a first set tiebreaker at No. 4 before winning 6-2 in the second and led 4-2 in the third when the match was decided.
