No. 20 Ichabod soccer meets Yellow Jackets and Mountaineers for neutral battles

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod soccer team will conclude its nonconference slate with a pair of neutral site contests against the Black Hills State (S.D.) Yellow Jackets and Western Colorado Mountaineers. Both games will be played in Kearney, Neb. at the facilities of fellow MIAA member Nebraska-Kearney. The Ichabods will face the Yellow Jackets on Sep. 20 and the Mountaineers on Sep. 22, with both matches scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m.


--- KICKOFF ---

  • Washburn Ichabod soccer travels to Kearney, Neb. for two neutral contests with Black Hills State (S.D.) and Western Colorado.
  • Washburn will take on the Yellow Jackets at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sep. 20 and the Mountaineers on Sunday, Sep. 22 at 11 a.m.

--- BOD BREAKDOWN ---

  • Washburn is 2-2-0 so far in the 2024 season.
  • The Ichabods went 21-4-1 in 2023, winning the MIAA regular season title and advancing to the NCAA National Championship Game.
  • Washburn is ranked 20th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Women's National poll.
  • Fellow MIAA member Nebraska-Kearney is hosting the Ichabods, Yellow Jackets, and Mountaineers. Nebraska-Kearney will also play Black Hills State and Western Colorado.
  • The Ichabods were picked first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll with 137 points.
  • Washburn returns 27 players from last year's national runner-up team, while adding two transfers and one freshman to the roster.

  • Washburn went 2-0 last week after defeating Southwest Minnesota State 2-0 and Wayne State College 1-0.
  • Riley Wells and Khloe Schuckman scored their first goals of the 2024 campaign in the win over Southwest Minnesota State, while the Ichabod defense held the Mustangs without a shot until the 80th minute.
  • Belle Kennedy scored her first goal of 2024 in the victory over Wayne State. Kennedy stole the ball from a Wildcat player and took it all the way to the goal.

  • Four Ichabods share the team lead in points. Cloe Quintana, Khloe Schuckman, Belle Kennedy, and Riley Wells have each recorded one goal.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Beck is tied for second nationally with 360 minutes played in goal.
  • Washburn ranks 18th in Division II in corner kicks taken per game. The Ichabods have taken 30 corner kicks for an average of 7.50 per game.

  • Senior Khloe Schuckman, last season's leading goalscorer, recorded her first goal of the season against Southwest Minnesota State. Schuckman leads the Ichabods with 11 shots taken this season.
  • Riley Wells scored her first goal of 2024 after tallying three goals last season.
  • Belle Kennedy scored her 10th career goal against Wayne State. The junior has taken six shots this season, with four being on target.
  • Sophomore midfielder Presslee Amick tallied her first assist of the season against Southwest Minnesota State. Amick has played 50 minutes across three contests so far this season.
  • Sophomore Hailey Beck recorded two shutouts in goal against the Mustangs and Wildcats. Beck made a career-high five saves in the game against Wayne State.

  • Khloe Schuckman is four goals away from 30 goals for her career and one assist away from 10 assists for her career.
  • Ana Muruzabal is five minutes away from 1,000 minutes played for her career.

  • Washburn will return home to begin MIAA play against Central Oklahoma on Friday, Sep. 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Yager Stadium. The Ichabods will also face Newman at home on Sunday, Sep. 29 at 1 p.m.
  • The MIAA Championship Tournament begins on Sunday, Nov. 10 with the quarterfinals taking place on campus sites of top-4 seeds.

Match #5 - Black Hills State (S.D.)

  • The Yellow Jackets are coached by John Hutchison in his second season.
  • BHSU is 0-2-2 this season after going 3-12-2 in 2023.
  • The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 0-0 draw with Minnesota-Crookston, their second shutout of the year.
  • Jayda Hammer returns for her junior season after leading the Yellow Jackets with four goals in 2023.
  • Hailey Warren returns after leading BHSU with three assists in 2023. She placed second on the team with seven points.
  • Senior defender Allie Brown is the only Yellow Jacket to play all 360 minutes so far this season.
  • Three goalkeepers have seen action for BHSU so far. Makayla Dannelly leads the squad with nine saves and has a goals against average of 1.50.
  • BHSU has taken 46 shots on the season, with 19 coming on goal for a percentage of 0.413.
  • This is the first meeting between the Ichabods and the Yellow Jackets.

Match #6 - Western Colorado University

  • WCU is led by Joshua Alcala in his first season. 
  • The Mountaineers are 1-3-0 this season after going 4-11-3 in 2023.
  • WCU is coming off a two-game homestand where they defeated Eastern New Mexico 1-0 and were defeated by St. Edwards 2-0.
  • The Mountaineers will face Nebraska-Kearney on Sep. 20 before meeting the Ichabods.
  • Cianna Thomas leads the Mountaineers with two goals scored, including the lone goal scored in the win over Eastern New Mexico.
  • Taylor Bottoms, Abby Raio, and Jordan Welsh have recorded one assist each so far for WCU.
  • Aubree Orosco has played 249 minutes in goal for the Mountaineers, tallying 21 saves.
  • WCU has taken 58 shots this season with a shots on goal percentage of 0.552. 
  • The Mountaineers have taken 17 corner kicks while only allowing 13 opposing corners.
