EDMOND, Okla. -- Washburn women's tennis kicked off the ITA Central Region Championships on Friday morning and leave the day with two singles players and all four doubles teams advancing into day two without a loss. Singles action for the second day begins in the round of 16 at 8:00 a.m. while doubles will begin at 2 p.m.
In Flight A for singles Washburn began the day with three moving into the round of 32. Daniela Tijaro swept both sets without dropping a game, Renske Ubachs won a pair of 6-1 sets and Saajida Razick won 7-5 and 6-4 in round one. Isabella Martensson fell 6-0, 6-3, Leo Floeth took her first set 6-2 but lost a 7-6(5) tiebreaker and 10-7 in the third set super tiebreaker. Jasel Bailey fell in a first set tiebreaker 7-6(2) but bounced back to win 7-6(5) in the second before falling just short, 10-8 in the third.
Issabella Pensavalle began the Flight B main stage with a two-set victory in the round of 64, 6-4 and 6-2. Daphney Koutsofta fell 7-6(2) in a tiebreaking first set before losing 6-0 in the second. Maddie Shelley completed the first round of matches winning 6-1 and 6-0 in her first dual.
In the second round of Flight A, Tijaro came up just short in her first set with a 7-6(4) tiebreaker going the other way. She fell 6-3 in the second set to end the dual. Ubachs cruised through 6-0 and 6-3 sets to move into the round of 16. Razick split the first two sets both going 7-5 in either direction before falling 10-8 in the super tiebreaker.
For Flight B, Pensavalle lost a three-set dual in the round of 32, falling 10-8 in the tiebreaker. Shelley worked a 6-2 win in the first set and took the second 6-4 to move into day two.
In doubles competition for Flight A it was Ubachs and Tijaro who opened things up, winning 8-4 to advance into the round of 16. Floeth and Martensson joined them as they won 8-1 to open their run.
In Flight B for doubles Pensavalle and Bailey advanced with an 8-4 win in the opening round while Shelley and Razick made it a Washburn sweep of doubles for the day, winning 8-5.
