EDMOND, Okla. -- Through two days of the ITA Central Region Championships Washburn women's tennis has three doubles teams, along with Maddie Shelley in the singles side of Flight B, remaining in main brackets. Semifinals action for both singles and doubles will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
In singles, Renske Ubachs won her opening set in the Flight A round of 16, 6-1. She fell 6-4 in the second set and came up just short, 10-7, in the third set super tiebreaker to end her run.
Maddie Shelley worked a 7-6(2) tie-breaking win in her first set in the round of 16 for Flight B. She carried the momentum into a 6-2 win in set two to advance. In the quarterfinal round, Shelley won a pair of sets, 6-3 and 6-4 to earn a spot in Sunday's semifinals.
Isabella Martensson and Leo Floeth kicked off the Ichabods' day in doubles with an 8-2 win in the round of 16 for Flight A. Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro joined them in the quarterfinals, winning 8-4 over the top ranked team from Nebraska Kearney. Martensson and Floeth punched a ticket to the semifinals, winning 8-3. Ubachs and Tijaro moved into the other side of the semifinals bracket after working an 8-6 win.
Shelley and Saajida Razick moved quickly into the quarterfinals for Flight B with a 8-1 win in the round of 16. Issabella Pensavalle and Jasel Bailey played the minimum eight games as they swept their way into the next round. In the quarterfinals Pensavalle and Bailey played an extra game before coming up just short in the tiebreaker, 9-7. Shelley and Razick were able to advance with an 8-5 victory to finish out the day.
