TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn men's tennis will make up half of the semifinals field for both singles and doubles at the ITA Central Region Championships on Sunday morning. Tim Hammes and Vasek Schneider advanced on the singles side while in doubles Hammes was joined by Matthew Earle and Schneider paired up with Tommy Cecchetti to reach the semifinals.  

Tim Hammes began the day in singles with his third straight convincing victory, sweeping his first set before winning 6-2 in the second. Tommy Cecchetti saw his run end in the round of 16 after falling 6-1 in the first set and coming up short in the set two tiebreaker 7-6(2). Vasek Schneider took control of his dual early and never looked back, winning 6-1 and 6-2 sets. Pavlos Parson took his first set an extra game before losing 7-5. The second set went 6-3 the other way to complete the round.  

In the quarterfinals Hammes continued to roll, winning 6-1 in the first set and 6-2 in the second. Schneider finished shortly after, picking up 6-2 and 6-3 victories to move into the other half of the semifinals bracket.  

In the B Stage for singles Ivan Ivanov came up short in a three set battle, losing the third set tiebreaker 10-5. Yoshinobu Nakatsuji finished his run in the quarterfinals with 6-4 and 6-2 losses. Marco Romano advanced out of the round, winning two sets both 6-2. He continued to roll through the semifinals, winning 6-4 in the first set and 6-2 to finish it off.  

On the doubles side, Earle and Hammes were challenged but were able to work an 8-6 win over opponents from Newman in the round of 16. Daniel Harkin and Graham Faris had their run ended after falling 8-3 in the same round. Schneider and Cecchetti became the second pair of Ichabods to advance, winning a swift 8-2 set. Earle and Hammes repeated the same score in the quarterfinals and ended with the same result as the seniors advanced with an 8-6 victory. Schneider and Cecchetti joined them on the other side of the bracket with an 8-6 win of their own.  

Semifinals action for singles is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the Championship round to follow. Doubles play will begin at 2 p.m. starting in the semifinals.
