KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Washburn women's tennis opened the 2024-25 season with a long day one of the Rockhurst Invite at the Plaza Tennis Courts in Kansas City, Mo. The Ichabods advanced three doubles teams and four on the singles side into day two at the top stage of their respective draws.
In doubles competition Isabella Martensson and Leo Floeth moved to the semifinals wth a 6-4 win in the Green Draw. Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro fell in a tiebreaker 7-6(6) in green. In the Orange Draw Saajida Razick and Maddie Shelley worked a 6-1 win while Daphney Koutsofta was teamed with Micila Dobrosavljevic and fell 6-1. Jasel Bailey and Issabella Pensavalle came away with a 7-5 win to wrap up doubles action in orange.
On the singles side Ubachs began with a win in the quarterfinals, 7-6(2) and 6-4. Tijaro won her opening set 6-3 before dropping a 7-6(5) tiebreaker and falling 10-4 in the super tiebreaker. In the semifinals Ubachs lost a pair of 6-2 sets.
In the Red Draw, Floeth opened the action with a pair of winning tiebreaking sets, 7-6(3) in the first and 7-6(5) in the second. Razick worked a quick victory in the quarterfinals with 6-0 and 6-4 set wins. In the semifinals Razick continued to roll with a pair of 6-2 victories. Floeth fell 6-4 in the first and 6-1 in the second set.
Martensson opened the Green Draw with a swift 6-0 and 6-2 quarterfinals victory. Bailey won a 7-6(0) tiebreaker and led 5-0 in the second set when her opponent retired. Martensson continued in the semifinals, winning 6-3 in the first set before falling 4-6 in the second. She bounced back to win 10-5 in the super tiebreaker. Bailey swept her first set 6-0 and won 7-5 in the second.
In the Purple Draw, Pensavalle won 6-1 and 6-3 sets to open the quarterfinals. Koutsofta worked a pair of 6-3 set victories to move on as well. Shelley made it three Ichabods in the semifinals of the bracket, sweeping her sets without dropping a game. In the semifinals she won both sets 6-1. Pensavalle and Koutsofta played different opponents in the extra matches instead of facing each other.
In the extra matches Koutsofta won 6-5, 5-7 and 10-2 while Pensavalle came away with 6-4 and 6-0 victories to finish the day out.
Day two will begin at 9:00 a.m. with singles brackets finishing and doubles action to conclude after.
