No. 2 Ichabods topple No. 24 Jennies in three sets

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 2 Washburn picked up its second straight ranked sweep and sixth straight sweep overall Thursday afternoon, downing No. 24 Central Missouri in straight sets. The Ichabods stay at Whiting Fieldhouse on Friday night, hosting Missouri Southern at 6 p.m.  

All three sets were tightly contested beginning with Washburn (18-1, 7-1 MIAA) winning 25-20 in the first before following with 25-21 and 25-23 wins in the next two sets over the Jennies (14-4, 6-2 MIAA).  

Central Missouri led the dance early in the first set leading 4-3. Brynne Topolski got a kill that started a 4-1 run, putting the Ichabods in front. They held the narrow lead until Topolski got another kill that became the first of six points for Washburn. A Corinna McMullen ace made it 19-12. The Jennies would score five in a row later in the set to pull within three but an Ichabod offense that hit .324 in the set finished it out at 25-20 on another Topolski knock.  

The Ichabods took control early in the second, a setter kill by Sydney Conner sparked a 6-2 run putting Washburn in front 15-10. Central Missouri stormed back, tying the set at 16 after four straight points. With the score once again tied, this time at 19, Topolski and Keilah Rivers slashed kills and Kali Henry served an ace. Another three-point run to end the set 25-21 put the Ichabods up 2-0 in the match.  

The first four points of the third set belonged to Washburn starting with a kill by Alex Dvorak. The Jennies hung around, eventually coming all the way back to tie the set at ten. They would go in front with a 5-1 run at 15-14. After five ties the Ichabods created a two-point advantage with Bella Limback making a solo rejection at 21-19. Central Missouri tied it back up at 23 but the final two points of the match belonged to the home squad to complete the sweep.  

Washburn once again hit over .300 as a team, slashing .306 with 47 kills while the Jennies had 41 kills and hit .210. Digs went in favor of the Ichabods 55-48 and they also led 44-38 in assists.  

Austin Broadie had a team-high 12 kills and hit .385, Alex Dvorak followed close behind with nine kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Corinna McMullen dished out 25 assists and made 12 digs, giving her a double-double on the night and over 1,000 career digs. Taylor Rottinghaus led the team with 14 digs and added four assists.  

Shaye Koski led Central Missouri with 10 kills, Kayla Baer had 35 assists and 12 digs.
