Late-inning rally sinks Ichabods in loss to Ouachita Baptist

HOT SPRINGS, Ar. -- A nine-run eighth inning downed Washburn for the first time this season as they fell 13-4 to Ouachita Baptist on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods will face Southern Arkansas on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they continue the Dugan Invitational.

Cooper Carlgren got the start for Washburn (1-1). The Tigers (1-1) led off the game with a solo home run to right field, but Carlgren was able to strike out the final two hitters of the inning to quiet down the bats. In the second inning the Ichabods were able to get on the board with two outs, starting with singles from Blake Scott and Jackson Mervosh. Payton McHarg and Jett Buck each followed with singles of their own, both driving in one run to put Washburn in front 2-1.

Carlgren continued to cruise after the opening batter, striking out two in the third and tossing a scoreless fourth. Washburn added a run in the bottom of the frame on another two-out single, this time by Darian Duhon to plate Mervosh who walked. Carlgren finished out his day with two more scoreless innings, giving him six on the afternoon.

In the bottom of the sixth the Ichabods got on the board again after a leadoff walk by Payton McHarg. He stole second and scored on another single from Duhon to make it 4-1.

Ouachita Baptist was able to score two runs in the seventh on two hits and a pair of walks. Fidel Hatch finished out the inning leaving two Tigers stranded on base. The next inning for Ouachita Baptist began with a hit batter, two singles and a walk to score one run. The next two batters singled and walked to score two more runs in what would be a nine-run inning putting them in front 12-4.

The Tigers went on to add another run in the top of the ninth as Washburn secured just one more hit the rest of the way in the 13-4 loss.

The Ichabods finished the game with 10 hits and nine walks at the plate, but left 13 runners stranded. Ouachita Baptist had 12 hits and also worked nine walks. The Washburn pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts, with five coming from Cooper Carlgren who threw six innings allowing one run.
