SPRINGFIELD, Il. -- No. 8 Washburn men's tennis began its spring season with a clean sweep over Illinois Springfield 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods take on McKendree tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. to wrap up the weekend.
Doubles play opened with Tommy Cecchetti and Vasek Schneider working a 6-3 win at No. 2. Pavlos Parson and Zino Nahirniak secured the doubles point for Washburn (1-0) winning 6-3 at No. 3. Matthew Earle and Tim Hammes finished out doubles play with a 6-3 win of their own over the Prairie Stars (0-1) team.
Schneider started out doubles play with a two-set win from No. 2 without dropping a game. Hammes followed behind, winning 6-1 in the first set and 6-4 in the second. Earle provided the clinching point from No. 3, winning 6-4 in the first and 6-3 in the second set.
Cecchetti added another point to the Ichabod total, winning 6-1 in the first and 6-2 in the second at No. 4 . Tobias Berning followed from No. 5, winning 6-4 in the first set and 6-1 in the second. Nahirniak closed out the day with a pair of 6-2 set victories from No. 6.
