SPRINGFIELD, Il. -- No. 11 Ichabod women's tennis began the spring season with a 6-1 win over Illinois Springfield on the road. Washburn will wrap up the opening weekend against McKendree on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Playing with only five people the Prairie Stars (0-1) were forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles dual, giving Isabella Martensson and Saajida Razick a victory by default. Peyton Koper and Leo Floeth worked a 6-3 win at No. 2 to secure the doubles point for the Ichabods (1-0). Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro completed a sweep of doubles, winning 7-5 on the top court.
Razick got off to a quick start in singles play with a 6-1 first set win before taking the second 6-3 from court three. Playing from No. 1, Ubachs won 6-3 in her opening set before bringing up match point with a 6-4 win. Tijaro fell in her opening set 6-4 and brought the second set to a tiebreaker, coming up just short, 9-7 to put Illinois Springfield on the board. Jasel Bailey worked quickly at No. 5, winning 6-1 in both sets to add another point to the board. Koper claimed a pair of 6-1 sets from No. 4 to close out the action. The Ichabods got another point by forfeit at No. 6 singles to round out the 6-1 scoring.
