Steady pitching silences Bucs bats in 5-3 10-inning win for Washburn

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- For a second straight day Washburn won 5-3, this time defeating Barry in the final game of the South Florida Baseball Jamboree on Monday night. The Ichabods return home hosting Augustana for three games beginning Friday, Feb. 14 at 3 p.m.

Piercen McElyea began the game on the mound for Washburn (3-5) and delivered three scoreless innings to begin the game, striking out three and not allowing a hit from the Bucs (4-2) until the third inning.

In the top of the fourth Darian Duhon was hit by a pitch with one out, one batter later Jett Buck opened the scoring in the game with a two-run home run on an 0-1 pitch to make it 2-0. In the bottom half of that inning a two-out double put one on. It was followed by a single. The baserunner previously on second was tagged out at the plate by Hayden Priest after an assist from Easton Bruce in left field, ending the inning.

The next time Barry was up to bat they began the inning with two walks. Chase Torkelson came out of the bullpen and got a ground ball that resulted in an error and a run scored. The next batter hit an RBI groundout to tie the game at two. Torkelson retired the final two hitters to keep the score knotted.

Both teams went down in order through the sixth and seventh innings as Torkelson stayed on the mound. The score stayed the same until the bottom of the eighth as the Bucs led off with a double. They were moved to third on a sac bunt and later brought home with another double.

In the top of the ninth Bruce and Duhon led off with back-to-back singles, both through the right side of the infield. With Bruce moving to third on Duhon's knock, Garrett Springer was able to score him on a sacrifice fly to center field, tying the game.

Kai Bennett silenced the Bucs bats in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extras. Blake Scott led off the 10th with a walk. Chase Littrell came on to pinch run and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jackson Mervosh followed with a single to the shortstop, scoring Littrell. Cash Jay walked to add more traffic to the bases and Payton McHarg reached on a fielders choice along with an error that allowed Mervosh to score and make it 5-3.

That is how the score would stand heading to the bottom of the tenth. Bennett stayed on the mound, striking out the first two batters and getting a pop up to shortstop to end the game.

Washburn out-hit Barry 7-5, while also taking advantage of four errors by the home team in the field to just one for the Ichabods.

The Washburn pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts while walking eight, but allowed just the five hits. Piercen McElyea finished with four innings tossed allowing no earned runs on three hits. Chase Torkelson went 3.2 allowing just one and Kai Bennett recorded the final seven outs facing the minimum.

Six of the seven hits on the day belonged to Easton Bruce, Jett Buck and Jackson Mervosh who each had two in the win. Buck had two RBI while Blake Scott also had two walks.
