Jay's walk off extra-inning blast gives Ichabods 11-8 win over No. 12 Lions

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn never led Saturday afternoon until the final at-bat of the game as they won in walk-off fashion, 11-8 in 10-innings over No. 12 Missouri Southern to secure a series victory. The Ichabods will go for a sweep in the series on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

The Lions (10-4, 3-2 MIAA) got to work with two outs in the top of the first, with a walk and a hit batter to put two on. Both came around to score on a double into the right-field corner. In the bottom of the inning Washburn (8-6, 4-1 MIAA) got one back, scoring on an RBI grounder by Jett Buck after a pair of errors on throws by Missouri Southern.

The next inning Blake Scott tied the game with a solo homer to right-center. A single and a walk put two on for the Lions in the third. A sac bunt moved both over before a fielders choice scored one. A high fly ball that painted the chalk on the left-field line dropped for a single and added another run for the visitors.

With two outs in the bottom of the inning Buck walked. Payton McHarg followed with a double into right center to score Buck. The next inning Connor Scott slashed a one-out single into right. He moved to third on a single from Darian Duhon and scored on a sacrifice fly into center off the bat of Hayden Priest to tie the game.

Two singles led off the fifth inning for the Lions as Washburn went to the bullpen. A walk followed by two hit batters plated a pair for Missouri Southern, all with no outs. They added one more on a sacrifice fly but Caden Bressler was able to leave the bases loaded and make it a 7-4 game.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth. A pair of singles for the Ichabods put two on for Hayden Priest who blasted a home run over the wall in left-center, tying the game at seven.

Bressler continued on the mound, throwing a scoreless eighth inning that was finished off with a 1-4-3 double play to get out of a jam. In the top of the ninth though the Lions led off with a double and single, scoring to go back in front. Blake Priest entered with one out in the inning and got the final two hitters to fly out and strand two.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth Easton Bruce was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. A flyout advanced him to third where he would score on a two-out single up the middle by Jackson Mervosh which sent the game into extras.

Blake Priest stayed on the mound in the 10th and worked around a single and walk to begin the inning. He got a popout to shortstop and struck out the final two hitters himself to keep the game tied.

Duhon led off the bottom of the inning with a single, Hayden Priest did the same. Cash Jay followed and took the first pitch he saw and sent it towering over the left field wall for a three-run walk off home run to end the game 11-8.

Washburn ended the game out-hitting Missouri Southern 16-11. The Ichabod staff combined for eight strikouts with four coming from starter Cooper Carlgren who tossed four innings. Caden Bressler went 4.1 innings allowing just one run and Blake Priest got the win, moving to 1-0 after 1.2 scoreless.

At the plate each of Connor Scott, Jackson Mervosh and Cash Jay had multi-hit days. Jay, Hayden Priest and Blake Scott each went yard with Priest driving in a game-high four.

The Lions were led by Will Doherty at the plate with a pair of hits and three RBI.
