Washburn blanks Augustana in 10-0 seven-inning win

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn got back in the win column picking up its first shutout of the season Tuesday afternoon defeating Augustana 10-0 in seven innings. The Ichabods finish out the series with the Vikings on Wednesday with first pitch set for 2 p.m.

Griffin Huiatt got the midweek start for Washburn (11-9) and delivered a pair of scoreless innings to begin the game, stranding two Vikings (9-4) on base in the second inning. A pair of singles from Darian Duhon and Jackson Mervosh put two on and the bases were loaded on a fielders choice. Payton McHarg broke the tie with a bases-loaded two-out walk.

After two more scoreless innings on the mound from Huiatt the Ichabods loaded the bases again in the fourth. Mervosh and Blake Scott each singled, and McHarg was hit by a pitch to fill the bases. Hayden Priest was also hit by a pitch, scoring one run. Cash Jay followed with a sac fly, scoring another to make it 3-0. Two batters later Jett Buck scored another with a single into left to complete the three-run inning.

In the fifth Mervosh was hit by a pitch and Connor Scott bunted for a single. McHarg scored one with a single into right field and Priest added another on an RBI groundout to make it a 6-0 ballgame heading into the sixth.

Caden Bressler took over on the mound in the sixth and retired Augustana in order. In the seventh he worked around a pair of walks to leave the bases loaded, getting a groundout to end the inning.

In the home half of the inning Blake Scott and Connor Scott each knocked through one-out singles and McHarg walked to load the bases. Jay doubled, this time down the right field line, clearing the bases. Easton Bruce followed with a single into right field, scoring Jay and ending the game via mercy rule after seven innings, 10-0.

Washburn out-hit the Vikings 12-4 in the game, while each side worked five walks. Griffin Huiatt and Caden Bressler combined to throw all seven innings, striking out six total while Huiatt earned the win, improving to 3-1.

At the plate four players had multi-hit days, led by Cash Jay who had the only two extra-base hits, both going for doubles to drive in four. Both Hayden Priest and Payton McHarg also drove in two.
