Ichabods can't overcome early deficit in 13-7 rubber match loss to RiverHawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Washburn couldn't avoid big innings from Northeastern State on Sunday afternoon as they fell 13-7 in the series finale. The Ichabods will face Fort Hays State at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Falley Field.  

Neither team got on the board in the first inning. It was Washburn (13-11, 6-6 MIAA) that opened the scoring with a two-out single by Connor Scott scoring Jackson Mervosh to go up 1-0. The RiverHawks (10-11, 7-5 MIAA) were able to score a pair in the second on two hits, taking the lead.  

The Ichabods took advantage of an error in the third, as Jett Buck singled into left field to score Cash Jay and even the game up. A pair of walks and a hit batter was paired with three hits in the third inning as Northeastern State scored three runs.  

Chase Torkelson took over on the mound in the fourth inning and tossed scoreless fourth and fifth frames as neither team scored. The RiverHawks added to the lead in the home half of the sixth, scoring three more on three hits to go in front 8-2.  

After Payton McHarg was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh. With two outs Easton Bruce shot a single into right field, scoring McHarg who had advanced to second. Jett Buck followed with a double, adding another run. Darian Duhon was hit by a pitch and after a Jackson Mervosh double he and Buck scored, pulling the Ichabods within two runs.  

Northeastern State doubled its lead with two runs in the seventh, taking advantage of an error by Washburn to go in front 10-6. In the eighth inning they added three more runs, two scoring on an error and one on a solo home run all with two outs.  

The Ichabods scored one in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Buck to score Jay but that is all they could tally as they fell 13-7.  

Washburn managed to out-hit the home squad 12-11. The RiverHawks managed seven walks while the Ichabods had just one free pass. Each team also had four hit batters.  

Four players took the mound for Washburn, combining for seven strikeouts. At the plate Connor Scott led with a 3-4 day, driving in one. Jett Buck picked up two hits to drive in three.
