WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Washburn was unable to get going on offense Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-1 on the road to No. 2 Central Missouri. The Ichabods are back in action facing Arkansas-Fort Smith for three games beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
The Mules opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of an error in the field by Washburn (14-15, 7-10 MIAA) to score two runs on a one-out single to go up 2-0. Griffin Huiatt tossed a scoreless bottom of the second to bring the Ichabods back up. In the third it was Washburn who took advantage of an error, with Jackson Mervosh scoring Connor Scott with a single to make it 2-1.
In the bottom of the inning Central Missouri was able to load the bases with two outs on a pair of singles and a hit batter. Two walks scored a pair of runs to put the Mules up 4-1. After scoreless fourth and fifth innings from Huiatt he exited for the day.
The Mules were able to bring home one run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. On offense, Washburn was unable to slash a hit after the sixth inning. Fidel Hatch entered in the seventh inning out of the bullpen, throwing a pair of 1-2-3 innings.
The Ichabod offense managed just one baserunner in the final two innings as Central Missouri held on for the 5-1 win.
Washburn was out-hit 5-3 in the game, with three hits marking a season-low for the Ichabods. Jackson Mervosh had one hit and the lone RBI.
Four pitchers took the mound, combining for six strikeouts. Griffin Huiatt had three across five innings with three earned runs.
