HAYS, Kan. -- Washburn fell in a pitchers duel on Tuesday afternoon, falling 4-1 on the road in a walk-off victory for Fort Hays State. The Ichabods are back in action on Wednesday facing Northwestern Oklahoma State at 3 p.m.
Caleb Lunnon got the start for Washburn and cruised through the first three innings of the game with just one runner reaching base before being eliminated on a double play. He stranded one Tiger on base in both the fourth and fifth innings with Fort Hays State not managing its first hit until the fifth.
On the offensive end, the Ichabods had just two hits and four total baserunners through the first five innings, with nobody reaching third base. In the sixth Cash Jay led off with a walk, he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs he moved to third on a passed ball before scoring the first run on a double into left center by Jett Buck.
Lunnon continued to cruise through the sixth and finished his outing with a scoreless seventh inning to keep the game at 1-0. Caden Bressler picked up where Lunnon left off in the eighth, leaving two Tigers on base in the eighth to send the game to the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth Fort Hays State got two walks in the first three batters with one out. A single into right field tied the game up at one. With two outs the Tigers got a walk-off home run to right field, scoring three runs as they completed a second ninth inning comeback against Washburn in as many games this season.
The Ichabds ended up being out-hit 5-4 in the game, with each team walking four times. Washburn's pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts, with five coming from Lunnon who went 7.0 innings and allowed just one hit and two walks over 102 pitches.
Jett Buck was the only hitter with a multi-hit game, he went 2-4 with the lone RBI for the Ichabods on the day.
Sebastian Burgos had the game-winning hit for Fort Hays State in his only at-bat after pinch-hitting in the ninth.
