Ichabods fall to Hornets in high-scoring game one

EMPORIA, Kan. -- Washburn fell in the first game of its weekend series with Emporia State 14-8 on Friday night. The Ichabods will look to bounce back in game two set for Saturday at 2 p.m.  

It was the Hornets (17-17, 10-13 MIAA) who got on the board first, scoring one run in the first on a pair of hits. The first three batters for Washburn (19-20, 12-14 MIAA) reached in the second, first with a single from Darian Duhon. Two batters later Owen Laessig brought him home with a single. With the bases loaded Hayden Priest shot a single into center, scoring two to take the lead.  

A leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning came around to score, cutting the deficit to one. In the third inning Emporia State strung together six hits, scoring four runs to go in front 6-3. The Ichabods answered back beginning with a hit batter and double by Jackson Mervosh. Priest plated one with an RBI groundout before another score on a double from Jett Buck. Connor Scott tied the game with a single up the middle to score Buck.  

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Hornets got three straight hits followed by a sacrifice fly to score two and go in front. In the next at-bat Emporia State scored four runs on four hits to go in front 12-6.  

 Washburn got two runs in the eighth, taking advantage of an error in the field by the Hornets. The two runs were matched in the bottom of the inning on a home run from Emporia State to go up 14-8 which is how the score would end.  

The Ichabods were out-hit 19-12 on the night, while the Hornets did have a pair of errors and each team managed four walks.  

Four pitchers took the mound for Washburn, combining for eight strikeouts led by Cooper Carlgren with four across 4.1 innings.  

Three players had multi-hit games at the plate led by three from Jett Buck who drove in one. Hayden Priest drove in a team-high three runs.
