No. 9 Washburn secures 4-3 road win over Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- No. 9 Washburn held onto an early lead Wednesday afternoon, securing a 4-3 road win over Missouri Western for a 12th straight victory. The Ichabods stay on the road facing No. 49 Northwest Missouri State on Saturday.  

The matched opened up with the Ichabods (14-1, 5-0 MIAA) gaining an advantage with Saajida Razick and Maddie Shelley working a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro secured the first point of the match with a 6-4 win on the top court. The Griffons (4-10, 1-6 MIAA) took the final doubles match, with Leo Floeth and Peyton Koper falling in a 7-6(7) tiebreaker lasting over an hour. 

In singles play Maddie Shelley worked quickly once again, nearly sweeping two sets without dropping just one game in the second set at No. 6 singles, to finish in less than 40 minutes. Jasel Bailey followed closely behind, winning 6-0 in her first set and finishing the dual out 6-1 in the second at No. 5 to set up match point. Missouri Western got on the board in the match as Leo Fleoth fell in two sets from No. 3, 6-0, 6-4.  

The Griffons added another point from the top court with Renske Ubachs coming up short in a pair of 6-3 sets in a ranked battle with No. 45 Cristina Granero Boj. Saajida Razick battled back from an early deficit to win her first set at No. 4 in a tiebreaker, 7-6(4). She carried the momentum into a 6-3 win in the second set to clinch the match for Washburn. After splitting the first two sets at No. 2, both 6-4, Daniela Tijaro fell in a third-set tiebreaker 7-6(4) to finish the match.
