Hot bats of No. 19 Gorillas down Ichabods in game one

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Washburn could not keep up with the hot bats of No. 19 Pittsburg State on Thursday evening, falling 13-2 in the opening game of the series. The Ichabods will look to bounce back with the series wrapping up on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

After a scoreless top of the first for Washburn (21-22, 14-16 MIAA) the scoring started with the Gorillas (32-7, 20-7 MIAA) in the bottom of the inning. A one-out single and walk were followed by a home run to make it 3-0. Cooper Carlgren worked around two more baserunners, stranding the pair. In the second inning Hayden Priest led off with a solo home run to get on run back.

In the bottom of the inning the first two hitters for Pittsburg State went long to go up 5-1. The third and fourth innings were scoreless for both sides, with the Ichabods managing two hits through the first five innings at the plate.

With two outs in the home half of the fifth the Gorillas sent another ball over the wall for a solo home run. After an error in the field and a single another error allowed a runner to come around and make it 7-1. In the seventh a bases-loaded two-out walk scored one before a bases-clearing double extending the lead to 11-1.

Priest led off the seven with a single, moving to third on a double by Connor Scott. He would score on a sacrifice fly from Darian Duhon but that is all Washburn would cut into the deficit. After a walk in the bottom of the seventh a two-out home run ended the game with the Gorillas on top 13-2.

Pittsburg State out-hit the Ichabods 12-5 in the contest including five home runs from the home squad.  They also reached base six times on walks with Washburn not getting any free passes.

Hayden Priest had the only multi-hit day, going 2-3 with two runs scored.
