No. 9 Ichabods down No. 3 Barry to reach first National Semifinal in program history

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- No. 9 Washburn is heading to the final four for the first time in program history after knocking off the No. 3 seed in the nation and No. 2 seed in the tournament, Barry on Wednesday afternoon. The Ichabods will square off with No. 7 ranked and No. 3 seed UT Tyler at 8 a.m. CST on Friday, May 23.  

Doubles play began with Washburn (22-3) claiming the advantage early with Pavlos Parson and Moritz Pieper winning 6-3 at No. 3. The Bucs (21-4) evened up the opening stage with Matthew Earle and Tim Hammes falling 7-5 on court one. At No. 2, Tommy Cecchetti and Vasek Schneider battled the entire way against No. 36 Gabriele Felline and Tim Riedel. They trailed 5-6 but were able to even up the dual at six games each. In the tiebreaker they pulled away for a 7-3 win to put the Ichabods up 1-0.  

Barry was able to even the score at one with a win over Zino Nahirniak at No. 5 by 6-1 and 6-2 scores. Pavlos Parson jumped ahead early over No. 33 Yan Kodjoed to work a 6-4 first set victory on court three. He continued to cruise with a 6-3 win in the second to pull back in front. Matthew Earle fell in a pair of sets at No. 6, 6-3 and 6-2 as the match was evened up again.

After falling 6-2 in his first set at No. 2, Vasek Schneider turned around for a 6-1 win in the second set. In the third he fell behind early but was able to mount a comeback late to win 6-4 and bring up match point. Tim Hammes also fell in a quick first set, losing 6-1 to No. 38 Riccardo Trione. He forced a third set after coming away with a 7-6(4) tiebreaker victory in the second. He was knotted at 3-3 on the top court in the third before the final three games went to the Bucs, tying the match once again.  

On court four Tommy Cecchetti jumped out to an early lead in his first set before it was tied up at six games all. He did the same in the tiebreaker, and did not relinquish the lead, winning 7-5 to take the first. The second set went to Barry, 6-3. The third set went back and forth with ties at three, four and five games each. After serving himself to a 6-5 lead Cecchetti broke the Bucs serve to win 7-5 and provide the match clincher.
