TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn men's tennis will send two doubles teams and four singles players into the Round of 16 at the ITA Central Regional Championship after the opening day of action at Kossover Tennis Center. Singles play is set to begin the day at 9 a.m. with doubles estimated to start at 3 p.m.
In the main draw of doubles action Yuto Miyagawa and Pavlos Parson breezed into the round of 16 with an 8-3 win over Newman. Tommy Cecchetti and Petr Leipner went into a tiebreaker before falling just short to Augustana, 9-8(3). Zino Nahirniak and Benjamin Fock worked quickly to win 8-2 over Southeastern Oklahoma State to begin their run.
In the B Draw, Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Graham Faris won 8-6 over Arkansas-Fort Smith in the round of 16.
Singles play began in the main draw with Benjamin Fock cruising to 6-3 and 6-2 wins in the opening round. Graham Faris fell in two sets, both 6-2, to Sebastian De Las Salas of Southern Arkansas. Tommy Cecchetti also was knocked out in the opening round, losing 6-2 and 6-3 sets to Gwendal Mazuay from Emporia State.
Zino Nahirniak breezed to a 6-3 first set win and won 7-5 over Benjamin Fracassi of Southeastern Oklahoma State in the first round. Yuto Niyagawa won in two sets of Arkansas-Fort Smith's Simeon Latinchev, 6-2 and 6-4. Pavlos Parson breezed to the second round, winning 6-1 and 6-3 sets to begin his run. Moritz Pieper took the first set 6-4 from Emporia State's Anton Sarunic, the No. 2 seed in the tournament. He fell in each of the next two, 6-4 and 10-5 to wrap up the opening round.
Zino Nahirniak won his first set 6-2 in the round of 32 before his opponent was forced to retire after one game in the second set, moving Nahirniak onto Saturday. Benjamin Fock started strong, winning 6-1 and battled for a 6-4 second set win to advance as well.
Yuto Miyagawa defeated Pavel Vysotin of Northwest Missouri in two sets, 6-4 and 6-3 to advance. Pavlos Parson made it four Ichabods moving on, knocking out Eric Poindexter of Southeastern Oklahoma State by set scores of 6-3 and 7-5.
In the B Draw, Mason Fair picked up a two-set first round victory while Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Petr Leipner fell in their opening matches.
