MANSFIELD, Texas - The Washburn Ichabod softball team picked up a 5-0 shutout win on Saturday afternoon at the Fields at Station in Mansfield, Texas. The Ichabods scored in four different innings and backed it up with dominant pitching to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Ichabods will wrap up the three-day event at the Lone Star Classic with two scheduled games on Sunday. Check wusports.com for any updates.
After two scoreless innings, Washburn broke through in the top of the third.
Kate Ediger singled to center to start the rally and
Maddie McGee followed with a bunt single, with Ediger moving to third on a Cameron error. Moments later,
Erin Boles delivered the big swing of the inning, ripping a two-run double down the left-field line to score both Ediger and McGee and give Washburn a 2-0 lead.
The Ichabods added to the margin in the fourth.
Madi Moore worked a leadoff walk and pinch runner
Ashlyn Gaughan stole second before advancing to third on a groundout. McGee then came through again, beating out an infield single to plate Gaughan and push the lead to 3-0.
Washburn made it 4-0 in the sixth when
Aspen Burgardt launched a solo home run to deep center field, her first long ball of the season. In the seventh, the Ichabods capped the scoring with aggressive baserunning and timely hitting.
Kate Dolan walked and eventually scored on a
Makenzie Sais double to shallow left, extending the advantage to 5-0.
In the circle,
Kierra Goos earned the win with five shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five.
Sadie Walker closed the game with two scoreless frames, giving up one hit and striking out three as the duo combined for eight strikeouts and only one walk.
Offensively, Washburn finished with seven hits. McGee went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Sais was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Boles drove in two with her third-inning double. Burgardt added a 1-for-3 day with a home run and an RBI as the Ichabods played clean defense and controlled the game from start to finish.
