Washburn improves to 13-1-3 and 9-1-2 in the MIAA, while Newman's season comes to an end at 2-13-3 and 2-9-1 in MIAA play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
"I'm really proud of them. They've been really consistent from the moment they showed up in August until now," Washburn head coach
Davy Phillips said. "Huge credit to them. They've battled, they've grown as a team, they continue to get better, and they are just such good competitors."
The Ichabods wasted no time, scoring in the seventh minute when
Leah Henke found
Kate Hinck for her third goal of the season.
Lindsey Maul then found the back of the net in the 10th minute on a deep shot from outside the penalty box, lofting it over the Newman goalkeeper to extend the Washburn lead to 2-0.
Shortly after,
Bricelyn Betts scored her fifth goal of the season in the 35th minute, assisted by
Haley Thomsen. The Ichabods carried their 3-0 lead into halftime and preserved it through the second half. Washburn outshot Newman 18-4 in the final 45 minutes, ultimately securing its 11th shutout of the season.
"One of the things I tell my team is we're up to play anyone, anywhere, anytime," Phillips said. This team loves competing and loves playing games together, no matter the opponent. For us, the opponent doesn't matter. It's just about us being our best."
