TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 11 Washburn returned to the courts for the first time in two weeks and turned in a 4-2 win over No. 8 Midwestern State on Sunday afternoon inside the Genesis Tennis Center. The Ichabods are back in action in an exhibition against Pratt CC on Friday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m.
Doubles play began with Washburn (3-0) gaining the advantage after Jasel Bailey and Saajida Razick worked a 6-1 win at No. 3. The Mustangs (3-1) evened the first stage up winning 6-2 at court two over Peyton Koper and Riko Konno. No. 4 Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro led early on the top court but could not hold on, falling 6-4 as Midwestern State went up 1-0 in the match.
Charlotte Bair led off singles play by getting the point back, winning two quick sets 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 6. Saajida Razick followed closely behind, winning by the same scores on court five to put the Ichabods in front. No. 40 Riko Konno played an extra game before winning 7-5 in her opening set at No. 2. She repeated the same in the second set, winning 7-5 over No. 42 Emilia Gyorgy to set up match point.
Playing on court three, No. 48 Daniela Tijaro fell 3-6 in her opening set before sweeping the second 6-0 to even up the dual. She fell 6-1 in the third as Midwestern State got on the board in singles play. Jasel Bailey took a 6-3 loss in her first set at No. 4. She bounced back to win 6-1 in the second and came from behind in the third to run away with a 6-3 win, clinching the match.
No. 14 Renske Ubachs was tied at 2-2 in the third set of her match at No. 1 against No. 10 Selin Sepken when the match was decided.
