WICHITA, Kan. -- No. 12 Washburn opened conference play Friday morning with a 7-0 road sweep over Newman after moving indoors due to weather. The Ichabods wrap up their time on the road facing Central Oklahoma on Saturday with first serve at 1 p.m. in Edmond, Okla.
Renske Ubachs and Riko Konno started the sweep for Washburn (10-2, 1-0 MIAA) with a 6-0 sweep on the top court. Mariana Silva Balsa and Daniela Tijaro followed with a 6-0 win as well at No. 2. Court three was not filled due to lack of players for the Jets (0-2, 0-2 MIAA) leaving the match un-started.
With Newman not filling court six in singles the Ichabods moved to leading 2-0 in the match. Charlotte Bair did not drop a game in her dual at No. 5, winning a pair of 6-0 sets to bring up match point. No. 15 Renske Ubachs provided the clincher on the top court, winning 6-2 in the first set and sweeping the second set 6-0.
Daniela Tijaro worked 6-3 and 6-2 set victories on court three to add a fourth point to the tally. No. 47 Riko Konno battled through an extra game in the first set before winning 7-5 and carrying the momentum into a 6-3 win in the second set at No. 2. Saajida Razick cruised to a 6-1 win in her first set at No. 4 before falling 4-6 in the second. She recovered to win 10-4 in the ten-point tiebreaker to wrap up the match with a sweep.
