No. 8 Washburn grounds Golden Eagles in 6-1 win

LAKELAND, Fla. -- No. 8 Washburn took control early and never looked back winning 6-1 over Charleston in a Wednesday afternoon neutral court meeting in Florida. The Ichabods are back on the court Thursday taking on Florida Southern at 9 a.m. CST.  

Leading off doubles play on the top court No. 42 Tommy Cecchetti and Kilian Martinez claimed a 6-4 win to give Washburn (5-3) an edge. Benjamin Fock and Pavlos Parson pulled away late, winning a 7-6 tiebreaker at No. 2 to clinch the first point of the match. Yoshinobu Nakatsuji and Yuto Miyagawa led early and went on to win a 7-6 tiebreaker as well on court three to make it a doubles sweep.  

Leading off singles play was No. 23 Kilian Martinez as he worked 6-3 and 6-2 victories at No. 2 to put another point on the board. Zino Nahirniak followed closely behind, winning 6-4 in the first set and 6-3 in the second to bring up match point. Benjamin Fock battled to win 6-3 in his opening set at No. 6 and cruised to a 6-1 win in the second at No. 6 to provide the clinching point.

No. 33 Yuto Miyagawa fell 2-6 in his first set at No. 5 but came back to win a tiebreaking second set. He fell in the third as the Golden Eagles (2-6) got on the board from court five.  

No. 11 Pavlos Parson went up with a 6-3 win at No. 2 but went into a third set losing 2-6 in the second. He bounced back to take his third set and add another point. No. 33 Yuto Miyagawa fell 2-6 in his first set at No. 5 but came back to win a tiebreaking second set. He fell in the third as the Golden Eagles (2-6) got on the board from court five.  No. 31 Tommy Cecchetti worked a  6-4 win in his first set and battled to win 7-5 in the second on the top court to wrap up the match with another point for Washburn.
